This is a world ruled by the dragon-kings, five enormous dragons who have sub j ugated humanity more than four centuries before. Considered living gods by the church they established, the dragon-kings in truth see humanity only as playthings – and food.

     Only one thing do the dragon kings fear: humans whom they call ‘the Elect’ – most of whom have been driven insane by a power within themselves that they do not understand. Each year these ‘Elect’ are unmasked during an autumn festival and torn from their family and friends. Their fate: to fight in a pointless war held for the amusement of the dragon-kings – and die.
